Meet the Beast - Johnny Om
Johnny Om's first recording for Organically Grown Music is an intriguing collection of catchy melodies, social satire, and musical invention that defies categorization. Johnny's pleasantly warped sound combines a variety of styles to create a compelling musical journey into the contemporary American mindset. His social criticism, however, is not without a heart and soul, and he never points at a problem without hinting at possible meanings and solutions.

SIMPLE MIND

It don’t take much, it seems, to pull out the rug - just give us an ear and we’ll jack you with fear as if it were a drug. We’ll fix your sight on black and white until you are blind; put a noose on your brain and lead you down the lane, lost with a simple mind. Simple mind, simple mind – can you plug your ears? Can you make yourself blind? Simple mind, simple mind – lose your choice to the noise of a simple mind. Yeah-eh – whoa-whoa-whoa – yeah-eh – whoa-whoa-whoa...
You’re either with us or against us, there is no in-between; we’ll leave you in the gray zone of your color TV screen. We’ll oversimplify it; we’ll spin in and we’ll bend. Either one way or the other, it’s all terror in the end. Simple mind, simple mind – can you plug your ears? Can you make yourself blind? Simple mind, simple mind – lose your choice to the noise of a simple mind. Yeah-eh – whoa-whoa-whoa – yeah-eh – whoa-whoa-whoa...simple minded all the time...simple mind, simple mind...

Monkey see, monkey do...

INVISIBLE BEAST

Invisible beast got outta the zoo. You can’t see him though he’s sittin’ right in front of you. From the look in an eye on a magazine cover, to the scent you’ve been sniffin’ on the breath of your lover. Do the channel jockey motor-motion moron journey – daddy is a doctor and mamma’s an attorney; got your learnin’ dangling over your head like a sword – one wrong step’s more than you can afford.
Invisible beast, invisible teeth, invisible death, invisible grief. I knelt by the side of the road and I prayed. Invisible pain, invisible tears, invisible hopes, invisible fears. Denial’s the name of the game, don’t you know. Denial’s the thing that’s been running the show. Don’t know about you, but I know about me. And even though it’s so damn painful to see, I shine on...
Invisible beast gets into your bed, enters your dreams and puts thoughts in your head. He gets you there early, he gets you there late, he charts your course and seals your fate. Every moment of every day, invisible beast comes sniffin’ away, from your own backyard to the halls of the nation, from the highest of towers to the very foundation.
Invisible beast might even be you – can I ever really know who I’m singing to? And then there’s never gonna be any guarantee, babe, invisible beast, he might even be me. Now the reason why the beast is so hard to find is cuz his empty promises have robbed us blind. The cost of living goes up but your paycheck’s the same; invisible beast, he invented the game...

WHATCHA SCARED FOR? (DEDICATED TO THE ONE-EYED LOVE)

Billion dollar deal goin’ down on the cell phone. Go and take your Hummer, drive a hole into the ozone. Nation’s on the run cuz it’s headed for a cyclone – hear about it all on the couch in your own home. Whatcha scared for?
Dog eat dog eat cat eat rat, eat all the lean, eat all the fat; there’s nothing left unless your teeth get sharpened up to grab the meat. Y’gotta bite and scratch and claw and creep like a thing from the swamp to the top of the heap – get with the program, play the game: but the program’s shallow and the game is lame, cuz the angle of the pyramid is sharp enough to slow your bid, and all of those you’re steppin’ on will step on you before too long. Back to the coal mine, gotta behave, lie to yourself that you’re not a slave; but with so many loans and interest to pay, well, the rest of your life has been given away. Whatcha scared for? Whatcha scared for?
Techno hair-care, fast lane day-care, lease-to-own on a no-fair time-share; blowin’ all the rest on the media fanfare, you can have your very own software nightmare. Hide the pills, hide the pot, hide the chocolate, hide your thoughts. Hide away your peanuts or the IRS will sniff ‘em out. Hide the books that you have read, hide the stains left on your bed, hide the tears that you have shed, find a hole and hide your head. McFlab, McFat, McFancy that, McFeast until you go McSplat, McFood, McFun, McFucked, McFed, McHeartattack, McSick, McDead. Whatcha scared for? Whatcha scared for? Whatcha scared for?
Take a look at your statistics – hard to get too optimistic: multinationals, special interests, think tanks stuffed with wealthy misfits...eat the poison, spread the fear, hop in your Hummer and get in gear, ride the road to ruin, year after year, and before we all know it we’ll all be there. Yes-men, cranks, buffoons and phonies, con-men, parasites and cronies – spreading terror like a cancer, promises instead of answers. Take their ugly lies as true, ignore the dirty deeds they do, and the next big war that will ensue will be the war for being you. Whatcha scared for? Whatcha scared for? Whatcha scared for? Whatcha scared for?
You wanna cause a revolution? Wanna move the institution? Well, listen up to Christafaiya: his solution, evolution. Chill the meters on your mind; downshift cuz the corner’s blind; take some time to go unwind and ten to one I bet you’ll find you wish you had an easy out from the chew it up and spit it out, kick it, kill it attitude that makes us do what we shouldn’t do. So get off the pot and find a better plot for dealing with this world we’ve got or the weight of answers never sought will one day kill us on the spot. Whatcha scared for? Whatcha scared for? Whatcha scared for?
Whatcha scared for?

WHEELS OF TIME

Wheels are rolling down the line; always rolling, wheels of time; on and on, we are turning.... Every second that we are alive is a second more of what we’re living for; every second on the wheel of time is an open door to lift yourself and soar.
Wheels are rolling down the line; always rolling, wheels of time; on and on, we are turning.... Catch the wind and sail away, leave the shadow time to yesterday – they keep on rolling anyway, those wheels are rolling down the line always rolling, wheels of time.
Wheels are rolling down the line; always rolling, wheels of time. On and on, we are turning, we are turning ... Every second that we are alive is a second more of what we’re living for; every second on the wheel of time is an open door to lift yourself and soar.

CRAZY WEATHER

Picture this now: You’ve been pulled up by your roots, computer chip in a monkey suit, and you’ve been taken for a ride. You signed up for a million years, and I have got your tickets here, so you can meet the beast inside. Crazy weather comin’ down.
I’m a perpetrator of circumstance, the organ grinder that makes you dance and jump with your tin cup to gather coins. The roles are reversed from last to first; you hope for the best but get the worst, cuz they never give you choices when you join. Crazy weather comin’ down.
Doesn’t matter what I feel, or if I get lost in the glass and steely jungles of the wild white collar crime, I will force myself to cope from one end or the other of a hangman’s rope, and you’ll claim I’m just a symptom of the times. Crazy weather comin’ down – crazy weather comin’ down.
I can climb no higher; I will roll back down like water I will seek the deeper ground.
You seek the earth you stand upon. In dead of night you seek the dawn. You seek to find yourself but not go too far. You seek what’s just behind the door. You seek a life that’s already yours. You seek the very thing you know you are. Crazy weather comin’ down – crazy weather comin’ down. Hey now, whatcha gonna do when we reach into your life and grab a hold on you? Hey now, whatcha gonna do when we reach into your life and grab a hold on you? You’re gonna move it – you’re gonna shake it – you’re gonna love it – you’re gonna break it like a fever, like a watch: telling time from a cross was the biggest lie we told you – tell me who’s the boss? Oh, what’s the cost? The bill is being tossed to the future generations who won’t know what they lost. Hey now...

MONKEY C2

There’s a big bad ball of wax, baby, guaranteed to make you drop. It’s enough to drive you crazy, but then that’s why you signed up. Looking for a needle in a haystack, looking for a head to call your own, looking for a way to turn the clock back – the final step is alone and that’s enough to free you; monkey find your own way, monkey see ...monkey! Monkey see, monkey do...monkey!

MONKEY DRIVER

Monkey driver, monkey show, it takes a whole lotta monkeys make a treadmill go. Open up the door on the monkey cage, you get a whole lotta monkeys for minimum wage. Oh brother, better run for cover or face it and escape. Standing up against conditions gonna take a higher ape.
Monkey city, monkey state, monkeys lining up just to meet their fate. They got monkey jobs with monkey perks; it only takes a few bananas make a monkey work. Oh brother, better run for cover or face it and escape. Standing up against conditions gonna take a higher ape.
If monkeys could see what monkeys could do without that monkey driver there bustin’ on the mood, you’d see ‘em moving forward instead of off the ground climbing up a tree that’s falling down...falling down...falling down...falling down...falling down. Oh brother, better run for cover or face it and escape. Standing up against conditions gonna take a higher ape...

NO MORE LIES

I wonder how the mask has held so long and held so fast. I wonder how the mask stays on. I wonder how such gross imbalance of perception holds the reigns on how our history marches on. I want some honesty and accountability (to you and me) and I want to hear no more lies.
They’re lost in their own world, divorced from those dependent on their strength;
instead they lay that strength to waste. As they led us to the jaws of a hungry beast, we plainly saw them take the cash, wipe their hands, and walk away. I want some honesty
and accountability (to you and me) and I want to hear no more lies.
I’m a liar too, but then I must admit, even that’s a lie – but what’s another lie in a world like this? I’m thinking honesty begins with being honest with yourself – then lies get harder to dismiss. I want some honesty and accountability (to you and me) and I want to hear no more lies. No more lies...

QUAIL HUNT

Going on a quail hunt. Going on a quail hunt. Going on a quail hunt. Going on a quail hunt.

THE SLAM

Ain’t gonna use my heart like no clock ticking by. Ain’t gonna use my heart like no clock ticking by. Long as I can breathe, I’ll be glad to be alive.
Ain’t gonna use my mind like no set of teeth. Ain’t gonna use my mind like no set of teeth. If I chew on the world, y’know I’ll never find relief.
Ain’t gonna use my head for no battering ram. Ain’t gonna use my head for no battering ram. I’d rather vegetate than perpetuate the slam. Go ask your Uncle Sam if he ever heard of the slam...

WHITE FLAG

[In the councils of government,] we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.
We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes.

– Dwight David Eisenhower, presidential farewell address

It takes more strength to make the peace than it does to fight a war...
white flag!

HOUSE OF FEAR

Every day we hear some news of something all too hard to chew, something bound to bring us down, to make us shake our heads and frown; every day another shot at all what little faith we’ve got; every day another poke, till life just seems like one sick joke.
In the house of fear...
But with all the nerves and spleen engaged, there’s still actors on the stage, staining history’s every page with the blood and sweat and tears of rage; and it’s cuz we feed the beast inside, make him king of the earth and lord of the sky – and how did this dark hour begin? cuz we’re afraid of the world we’re in.
In the house of...would you say your life’s a fraud if you’re serving the devil and calling him God? In the house of fear.
Can’t say what it’s all about, couldn’t fit that much inside my mouth. But I can say this: that if we give in to the beast inside, then no one wins. No one wins cause all is gone when the beast inside makes you a pawn in his lifelong quest to muscle in on a world he’ll never comprehend.
In the house of...would you say your life’s a fraud if you’re serving the devil and calling him God? In the house of fear.
Love and war, it’s a crazy choice in a world of plastic, trash and noise, and a tyrant’s charming evil grin invisible through all the spin. Now you see him, now you don’t, first you’ll want him, then you won’t. What’s the price we’ll have to pay for letting fear get in the way?
In the house of...would you say your life’s a fraud if you’re serving the devil and calling him God? In the house of...monkey see, monkey do; whatcha scared for at the zoo? In the house of fear.

LOVE AND WAR

Thunder cracked and the gray sky wept on the dark king’s armored horses. Over fertile fields the fire swept as we rode the heavy horses. The god of war’s cold devotees rode steady on the horses, from century to century, on the dark king’s armored horses...

They say that all is fair in love and war – ever wonder what they say it for? Love and war are the only times, you know, when most of us will let our feelings show.
I’m slipping outside to get my head together, to get a change of weather from the storm. I’m slipping outside cuz the future is uncertain, cuz now I see the curtain has been torn.
You’d think that if we came to know the score, we’d make the wiser choice in love and war. In war it isn’t death that stirs the fear; it’s really more that love has disappeared.
Why do you think it’s either one way or the other, either love or hate the brother at your door? I understand that when you feel afraid or threatened, you’re prone to think the weapon helps you more.
You know I wouldn’t be so involved if I didn’t wanna see this thing resolved. Make no mistake of what I’m saying here: you can choose the love or choose the fear.
Choose it...

MONKEY C WHO U R

Somewhere inside there’s a place you can touch, the line of the shadow, where nothing’s too much; a place where you learn the real hero is you; the place where you see that you are your heartbeat, your God and your Goddess of life and of death, that you are the concrete, the tarmac, the roadkill, the fast freeway buzz and the black diesel breath; that you are the all and that you are the none of it, the serious, sad, and just sick-for-the-fun-of -it, death-inviting son-of-a-gun of it; and then you will know it’s all in your hands, from bottom to top, beginning to end, all that you see in all of your world, every last creature and every last soul, the moment you light the flame in your eyes and see who you are...

ARCHITECTS OF DESTINY

It seems like there is less tomorrow than there ever used to be. But are we slaves of sad-eyed songs or architects of destiny? It seems we’ve slipped a gear of mind, crippled by a plague of blindness – and if we’ve drained the well of kindness remains to be seen.
It seems the future’s disappearing back into the dark machine. Are we bait for fatal blows or architects of destiny? Where’s the power of our eyes when the neon image hypnotizes, and from the shallow pool arises nothing to be seen?
It’s like the weight of the world when you speak your mind and your voice remains unheard, and you feel the heavy price we pay for silence, when words collapse into nothing left but crying...crying for the world.
It seems the ever-after’s ever smaller in its mystery. Are we executioners or architects of destiny? No matter where it’s felt among us, time will bear the blows that stung us – but who will bear the cost of it remains to be seen.

SOMEDAY FADE AWAY

Days like tumbled riverbed, hours in the sky; all those things that go unsaid and the years just pass us by. And if you ever find the time, could you please set aside just a moment from the game. Now’s the time to realize all the world before your eyes will someday fade away...someday fade away.
Hours pass like falling rain into the earth below; tomorrow turns to yesterday before we even know. And if you ever find the time, could you please set aside just a moment from the game. Now’s the time to realize all the world before your eyes will someday fade away...someday fade away.
I know what I have seen, and I have seen the bones picked clean, and I have seen the rivers rise, and I have seen the troubled skies; and I have seen the years of wonder vanish into days – darkest hour, roll of thunder, and then it fades, then it fades away.
Years go by and we’re afraid to sink so deep we cannot breathe. But all those things we fear to think, they might just set us free – set us free – and if you ever find the time, could you please set aside just a moment from the game. Now’s the time to realize all the world before your eyes will someday fade away...someday fade away.
